Abstract

Vehicle performance is influenced by various factors, including fuel quality and ignition system conditions. One of the important ignition components is the spark plug, particularly the electrode gap, which affects spark quality and combustion efficiency. This study aims to analyze the effect of fuel variations and spark plug electrode gap variations on vehicle performance and determine the optimum combination for improving engine performance. This research employed an experimental method using a standard Honda Beat 110 cc motorcycle as the test object. The fuel variations consisted of Pertalite (RON 90), Pertalite mixed with 0.3% Octane Booster, and Pertamax (RON 92). Spark plug electrode gap variations ranged from 0.60 mm to 1.00 mm with intervals of 0.05 mm using NGK MR9C-9N and Denso U27EPR9-N9 spark plugs. Performance testing was conducted using a chassis dynamometer to obtain power (HP) and torque (N.m) data. The results showed that spark plug electrode gap variations significantly affected vehicle performance. Power and torque increased as the electrode gap widened until reaching an optimum point, after which both values decreased at larger gap settings. Fuel variation also affected vehicle performance, where the use of Pertalite mixed with Octane Booster produced better performance than pure Pertalite. Overall, the combination of Pertalite mixed with Octane Booster and a spark plug electrode gap of 0.85 mm produced the most optimal vehicle performance among all tested variations.
