Abstract

The addition of cargo bed width on freight vehicles is a modification commonly carried out to increase loading capacity. However, changes in vehicle dimensions may affect driving safety by expanding the blind spot area and reducing the driver's visibility through the side mirrors. This study aims to analyze the effect of cargo bed width modification on blind spot changes, determine the blind spot boundaries, and identify the measurement method used to determine the invisible area around the vehicle. This research used an experimental method with a descriptive quantitative approach on a Mitsubishi Canter box truck with cargo bed width variations of 8%, 20%, and 30% from the standard dimensions. Data collection was carried out through observation, direct measurement, interviews, and documentation. The blind spot area was measured using a modified Grid method by using a rope as a reference for the driver's viewing line through the side mirrors. The results showed that increasing the cargo bed width affects the blind spot area and changes the driver's viewing angle through the side mirrors. The greater the increase in cargo bed width, the more limited the driver's visibility around the vehicle. Therefore, vehicle dimension modifications should comply with applicable technical standards to maintain the operational safety of freight vehicles.
